TAKING EFFECTIVE NOTES 


-writing down information from the lecturer using your own words 


Reason to take notes in class 

  • help identify core ideas from using organized notes
  • the lecturer may contain information that is limited 
  • class assignment are usually given during lecture, even the answers  

How to take better notes : 
  • do not write down every single word
  • pay attention
  • highlight, underline and use capitals 
  • get rid of distraction 
  • leave gap 
  • make yourself comfortable 

before class :
  • make sure to have tools you need to take notes e.g ( pen,pencil,eraser,paper)
  • review your reading assignment
  • write the date on top of paper 

during class:
  • sit in front, near the front, or in the center 
  • ask questions that came up on mind 
  • be an aggressive listener 
  • do avoid distractions (doorway, window glare and peers)

observing lecture's mood :
  • focus 
  • be alert to repetition
  • important material will be written down by the lecturer 
  • observe the lecturer's interest level 
  • let go of judgement about the style the lecturer is using
