Memory learning & Improving concentration
MEMORY LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
MEMORY VS BRAIN
Memory is an individual's ability to store, strengthen and keeping any information and experience that one has gone through. Also known as the Computer Software.
On the other hand, the brain; is an organ. Also known as the Computer Hardware.
BRAIN
Our brain is the greatest blessing to us from Allah S.W.T. With this blessing, every human can create amazing things including our technology that we are using right now. And that is why it is important for use to know what is inside our brain.
Our brain can be divided into two parts which is the left side and the right side of the brain.
Left side Right side
-Logic -Abstrak
-Consecutive -Random
-Mathematics -Intuitive
-Language -Art
-Science -Music
-Analyse -Imagination
-Rational -Emotion
COMPUTER ANALOGY
- Output devices
- computer - monitor, printer
- human - writing, talking
- Input devices.
- computer - keyboard, mouse
- human - 5 human senses
- Storage device.
- computer - hard disk
- human - 3 types of memory
MEMORY
Our memory system can be divided into three types which is Sensory Memory(SM), Short-Term Memory(STM), and Long-Term Memory(LTM).
- Sensory memory(SM) - the shortest-term of memory, triggered by human senses. It can also turn into short-term memory if it is rehearsed.Otherwise, it will disappear instantly.
- Short-term memory(STM) - also known as working memory, stores information temporarily and choose whether it will disappear or turned into long term memory.
- Long-term memory(LTM) - can last for a few days or for many years.rather it is up to the individual ability to recall the experience.
RECALL
The ability to recall is what makes a person different from others. Genius people have the ability to recall past memories in short amount of time.If you want to be called a genius, you need to have the ability to recall your past memories from your long-term memory storage.
FORGETTING SOMETHING
Why it happens :
- did not pay attention in class
- did not understand the information given
- doing something last minute
- did not concentrate ( distracted)
How to avoid :
- focus on the lesson
- make small notes
MEMORY STRATEGIES (HOW TO IMPROVE MEMORY)
1.Massed Practice VS Spaced Practice :
- Massed practice :
- bad for mental health- cramming and studying to many subjects at one time, usually in the peak of time before examination
- our brain can not handle a large amount of information in such a short time including exhaustion from cramming without taking any break.short-term memory can not that amount of information
- Spaced practice :
- good and flexible- keeps mental and body health in check, takes rest between study over some period of time
- spaced practice allows the information to settles in and turn into a long-term memory for future use
- taking breaks between learning/study sessions allow your brain to process and organize the information
2.Breaking reading materials into manageable size :
- break reading material down into flexible sizes for some period of time
- for example : 1-2 chapters a day to avoid cramming and last minute study
3.Rehearsal :
- repeat information many times in order to turn short-term memory into a long-term memory
4.Elaboration Strategies :
- using acronyms or catchwords
- using acrostics or catchphrases
ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES
-organize the materials, some can be divided into species and parts, for examples. vehicle
UNDERSTANDING CONCENTRATION
-Concentration is the power or action of an individual to focus on what one is doing.
-Very important during gathering information or doing something that requires focus.
CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES
How to improve concentration :
- create a distraction to do list
- exercise(physically)
- meditate
- do things at your own pace
- do not cramming
SQR3 READING/STUDY SYSTEM
(CONCENTRATION CHART)
-Survey -before
-Question -before
-Read -during
-Recite -after
-Review -after
survey - read the chapter, summary or introductory and concluding paragraphs
question - ask yourself a question while surveying, turn the title or heading into a question to keep yourself asking for answer
read - look for answers to the question you think of, take notes from the text but write in your own words or phrases
recite - read keywords multiple time to memorize it and create an acronym to memorize a list of information
review - look back at your own notes, study them and check your progress. recall your previous questions and try to answer them, small notes should have been stored inside our brain as a long term memory
